Hello fellow Rotarians! I was honored to fill in for President David Hahn at our weekly meeting last Tuesday. We were fortunate to have Kris Watson, Director of the City of San Bernardino Animal Services Division, join us as our guest speaker. Kris provided a fantastic overview of the important roles Animal Services personnel perform for our community. She introduced us to a wide variety of programs sponsored by the Animal Services Division including opportunities to foster animals, adoption and placement services, discounted microchip and spay/neuter clinics, and the benefits available to low-income pet owners sponsored by the nonprofit Lange Foundation. We also heard the great news about facility improvements at our local shelter including improved living conditions for animals as well as plans for a future new building with a community meeting center. The Animal Services Division is always looking for volunteers (age 18+) to help support their mission if you or someone you know may be interested!
Next Tuesday our guest speaker will be Darren Goodman, newly-appointed Chief of the San Bernardino Police Department. I hope you will join us and take advantage of this opportunity to meet and greet our new Chief and hear about his plans for the future of law enforcement and public safety in San Bernardino.

Police Chief, Darren Goodman
Darren Goodman began serving as San Bernardino Police Department’s 41st Chief of Police on June 6, 2022. Prior to joining the SBPD, he served as Chief of Police for the City of Upland Police Department since July 16, 2018. Before assuming that role, he was a Captain for the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department where he spent a total of 27 years. During his time with the Sheriff’s Department, Chief Goodman’s roles included serving as the Police Chief for the Chino Hills Police Department and Commander of the Frank Bland Regional Training Center. He also worked in Corrections, Patrol, Narcotics, Emergency Operations, Regional Gang Enforcement, Fugitive Apprehension, and SWAT.
His law enforcement philosophy includes a commitment to data-driven policing principles, civic partnerships, and community engagement. Chief Goodman has implemented holistic approaches to addressing crime and quality of life issues by reducing gaps between police-specific services and other service providers dedicated to public safety such as public works, code enforcement, mental health services, and homeless advocates. A strong advocate of community policing, Chief Goodman regularly facilitates community forums to engage citizens and increase stakeholder inclusion.
Chief Goodman holds a master’s degree in Public Administration and a Doctor of Education in Organizational Change and Leadership from USC. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Southern Illinois University. Goodman has also completed law enforcement and leadership programs at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security, and POST Command College Program.
