Last Tuesday, we heard from guest speaker Jordie Annen, Community Engagement Specialist with the Ontario International Airport. Jordie provided some interesting facts and insights about operations at our local mid-sized airport and discussed some exciting future plans and opportunities in the coming years. One of the more interesting points from my perspective was the ONT+ Visitor Pass Program. Since 9/11, only ticketed passengers have generally been permitted to pass through security and proceed to a gate or make use of the post-security facilities within the airport. We all remember a time when we could escort our family or friends all the way to the gate to watch them depart or meet them at the gate to greet them upon their arrival. Well, those days are now back at select airports including Ontario! Anyone wishing to pass through airport security without a flight boarding pass may apply for TSA approval to do so up to 7 days in advance and even on the same day of entry. For more information about this great new program, visit https://www.flyontario.com/ontplus. Thank you Darcy McNaboe for inviting Jordie Annen to speak with our club.
New Bylaws Committee
A committee was established on June 4, 2024 to review and update the bylaws of the Rotary Club of San Bernardino as well as the bylaws of the San Bernardino Rotary Foundation. Both documents are overdue for review and revision. Copies of the bylaws are available on our club website at www.rotarysb.org. I encourage everyone to review these documents and make any recommendations you may have to committee members Phil Savage, Bill Orr, Brad White, Lindsey Cobaugh, or Brian Pellis. Make your voice heard!
Rotary International is a vast and complex worldwide organization. There are many facets of Rotary that you may not know or fully understand. The good news is, you are not alone and there is a great and easy way to learn more about our great organization! Rotary has an online learning center available to all Rotarians. Audio/visual and text materials are available on the Rotary International website at www.rotary.org/learn. You will need to set up a user account, but once you do, you can review or take numerous online courses 24/7 in areas such as: About Rotary, Club Leadership, District Leadership, Membership, Professional Development, Public Image, Service, and the Rotary Foundation. I have had the opportunity to take several online Rotary courses when I was preparing for my term as club president and I found these courses to be very interesting and highly informative. I strongly encourage everyone to take the time to learn more about Rotary and become more involved!
DACdb – Connect With Rotary
I recommend everyone to take the time to learn more about the benefits of DACdb (District and Club Data Base), the website and smart phone application used by Rotarians worldwide to connect with Rotary and fellow Rotarians. There is a wealth of information available on the DACdb service. You can easily find contact information for other Rotarians, locate local clubs to visit while traveling, and view club and district events using the online calendars. We have done basic club-level DACdb training in the past. However, if you need a refresher or if you missed the training session, I encourage you to attend one of several District 5330 DACdb training session held throughout the year. The next such session is scheduled for Saturday, September 14, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. at Tahquiz High School in Hemet. If you’d like to get started before then, please let me know and we can schedule some time to get you logged on.
Last Chance to Donate This Rotary Year
There are only two weeks left to donate this Rotary year. Rotary International President Gordon McInally’s theme for this year is to Create Hope in the World. One way we can help create hope in the world is to make a donation to a Rotary cause. Rotary’s initiative and goal for donations is “Every Rotarian, Every Year.” Every donation matters, whether it is $5 or $5,000. You can donate to the PolioPlus Fund to help eradicate polio, to the World Fund to be allocated worldwide where the need is greatest, to the Disaster Response Fund to support disaster relief grants, to the Brazil Flood Response Fund to help with this very recent disaster in South America, or to the Annual Fund which gets divided between the World Fund and District Designated funds. If you have not made a donation this Rotary year, or even if you’d like to make another donation, there is still time! Please visit https://my.rotary.org/en/donate to make your contribution online. Thank you for your continued support of Rotary’s important missions!

Featured Presentation
Cynthia McGuigan, Steps 4 Life Community Services
After 25 years of suffering from addiction, homelessness, and trauma, Mrs. McGuigan found a new beginning by going to rehab and learning from her mentor that she needed to change everything. Lacking a job and parenting skills and having a five-year-old son to raise, she decided to go to school to become a counselor. Her main goal was to open a home for women suffering from addiction, incarceration, and homelessness. She opened Steps 4 Life in 2001 as part of a full-hearted mission in the hope of touching at least one person's life.
Mrs. McGuigan went back to school to become a counselor. She graduated from the California Paramedical School in 2001. Mrs. McGuigan has worked in the field of substance abuse for 24 years and graduated from the University of Phoenix in 2012. Mrs. McGuigan has dedicated her life to improving the lives of those who have suffered from afflictions that have hindered their lives. Her goal in life is to continue to do the work that has been bestowed upon her and help families reunite. In 2021, she was diagnosed with cancer. The fact that she fought her way back to serving others during the pandemic says a lot. Her mission is always to give back. In 2022 she was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer and was told she only has 2 years to live she has surpassed that time. And still continues to give back to her community,
Since Steps 4 Life's inception, she now has five homes. serving all populations of men, woman & children, veterans, the homeless, victims of domestic violence, and those with mental health struggles. Basically, any person wanting to change their lives is welcome. Join our family to be able to have a new life. We believe in giving you today so you can have tomorrow.
