Last Tuesday, we were honored to have as our guest speaker Superintendent Mauricio Arellano with the San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD). Mauricio was raised in the heart of San Bernardino and attended Riley Elementary, Golden Valley Middle School, and San Bernardino High School. In addition to his service with SBCUSD as an educator and administrator, Mauricio also has experience working for the Redlands and Palm Springs school districts. Given his local upbringing, Mauricio understands the San Bernardino community and is therefore well-suited to lead our local schools. Mauricio is unabashedly proud of San Bernardino and recognizes the human potential of all members of our community. In fact, human potential is the first and most important of nine operating values established for the District, which also include equity, safety, collaboration, professionalism, resilience, innovation, diversity, and pride. Under his leadership, the District has also crafted the “SBCUSD Shines” Vision 2030 initiative, which focuses on the following six pillars to achieve excellence:
S – SBCUSD Strong
H – High expectations for academics and innovation to be college and/or career ready
I – Involvement of students, family, community, and staff
N – Nutrition, health, and wellness
E – Equity as a foundation
S – Safe, secure, and attractive learning environments
We are fortunate to have Mauricio leading our District and overseeing the critically important role of educating our children. Thank you Mary Ellen Abilez Grande for arranging his appearance at our meeting.
No Meeting This Week
There will be no Rotary Club meeting this Tuesday, July 30, 2024 as it is the fifth Tuesday of the month and the Elks Lodge will be closed. We will begin our new meeting schedule (first and third Tuesdays each month) starting August 6. Our guest speaker that day will be Ron Coats of the East Valley Water District. See you then!
Club Assembly August 20
Our annual Club Assembly meeting will be held Tuesday, August 20 at noon. This will be a very important planning session for us to come together and adopt our club goals and service project(s) for the year and to discuss other important club business. Please take some time before our assembly to think about what you believe our club should be doing this year and identify one or two ideas for community service projects to share with the group. Mark your calendars and join us to make your voice heard as we decide how best to continue to serve the needs of our community in the best Rotary spirit.

DACdb Training
In the June 18 edition of the Orange Peal, we highlighted the District and Club Database (DACdb) online portal. Our club and Rotary District 5330 rely heavily on the DACdb portal to store and share information and to keep our many Rotary activities organized. Using DACdb, you can view: our club meeting schedule including upcoming guest speakers, a roster of club members and their contact information, the District events calendar, information about other clubs and club members in our District including their newsletters and special events, grant information, and much, much more! If you haven’t yet registered for DACdb access or if you need assistance navigating the portal, you are in luck! Our District will be hosting another DACdb training event on September 28, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. at Tahquiz High School in Hemet. Friendly Rotarians will be available to help you set up your account, teach you how to use this important system, and even download the handy DACdb mobile application on your smartphone! If you are interested in attending this free training, please let Brian Pellis know so he can get you registered.
