At our last Rotary meeting on August 6, 2024, our guest speaker was Michael More, General Manager and CEO of the East Valley Water District. Michael has many years of experience in the water industry and explained how the many water districts in the Inland Empire work together to ensure that we all have clean and safe water. Michael explained how water districts source their water, which largely comes from a massive underground aquifer in our area. He also unveiled some of the capital projects underway, planned, and recently completed by the District, including a new wastewater treatment facility at Sterling Avenue and 5th Street that has garnered the attention of water experts from all over the world.
Joining Michael for his presentation to our club was East Valley Water District Board Member and fellow Rotarian David Smith, who hails from the San Bernardino North Club. David shared his very positive perspective on the Water District, past, present and future. We are very fortunate to live in an area that has such a bountiful supply of water that reduces the need for water to be sourced from other geographical areas. Nevertheless, we must continue to do our part to conserve water wherever possible to ensure it remains available to us in the future.
Rotary Avenues of Service
Rotary International has developed many principles and guidelines over the years to provide Rotarians with a strong, common purpose and direction. These principles serve as a foundation for our relationships and the action we take as Rotarians in our community and in the world. One such set of principles is the “avenues of service,” which serve as the foundation of club activity. These avenues of service are intended to ensure that Rotary clubs all over the world are focused on a common mission. As a refresher, we as Rotarians support and adhere to the following five avenues of service:
Club Service – focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan.
Vocational Service – calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society.
Community Service – encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest.
International Service – exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and understanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, seeking partiers abroad, and more.
Youth Service – recognizes the importance of empowering youth and youth professionals through leadership development programs such as Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Rotary Youth Exchange and of course, our very own San Bernardino Rotary Life Program!
Club Assembly
This Tuesday will be our annual Club Assembly during which we will be discussing important topics such as our club’s goals and objectives for the new Rotary year. We are a service club, and each year we commit to fulfilling all five Rotary Avenues of Service. Keeping those avenues of service in mind, please take some time before our meeting on Tuesday to consider the following questions as we prepare to gather to discuss our club’s priorities.
What will your service commitment be to Rotary this year?
In what ways can our club commit to the five Rotary Avenues of Service this year?
What club events are most meaningful to you and to our community?
Will you help our club achieve 100% support of the “Every Rotarian, Every Year” fundraising mission?
What are your ideas to improve our club?
District Interact Conference
On Saturday, August 3, 2024, Rotary District 5330, in conjunction with the Desert Hot Springs Interact Club, held an annual Interact Conference for Interact students and advisors from throughout the District. This was the first such conference since the pandemic, and it was well-attended by students, advisors, and Rotarians. Two of our senior class Rotary Life students attended with Rotary Life Advisor and Rotarian Ed Hensley and Rotarian Brian Pellis to represent our San Bernardino Club and our amazing Rotary Life Program. We were honored to have District Governor Judy Zulfiqar present as we learned about many of the amazing community service projects completed by Rotary’s Interact students and the impact the Interact program has on our youth and our communities. As you know, in addition to our Rotary Life program which is a version of Interact, our Rotary club also sponsors a traditional Interact Club at San Bernardino High School. Larry Asmus is our liaison with the SBHS Interact Club and we appreciate his efforts and the hard work of all of our Rotary Life advisors to make such a positive impact on our local youth!
Rotary Leadership Institute
We are well into our new Rotary year, which means the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is starting up once again! The first session of RLI for the year will be held Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Beaumont Presbyterian Church. Join Rotary novices and experts from around the District to learn all about the many aspects and missions of Rotary. Your involvement at the club level is just the start of your Rotary journey! Sign up for this great event on DACdb and take that next step in your growth as a Rotarian. To graduate from the RLI program, you need to attend three sessions. Each session is offered a few times a year, so you can jump on board at any time. The cost is $30, but that is reimbursable by our club. I strongly encourage everyone to come out, learn about Rotary, meet and interact with fellow Rotarians from around the district, make new friends, and experience all Rotary has to offer!
President, Bill Orr 2024-2025
