President's Message

Hello Fellow Rotarians,

Last week was our first meeting of the new Rotary year.  It was great to see everyone again after our Fourth of July holiday break! Unfortunately, our guest speaker was ill and unable to attend the meeting.  However, we did not let that stop us from having a great gathering as we shared a nice lunch and camaraderie together. We also recognized the members of our Rotary Board of Directors who served during the past year and thanked them for their service to our club.

Following our regular meeting, our Rotary Bylaws Committee met to continue to update and revise our club’s governing bylaws, which are overdue for revision. Thank you Phil Savage for taking the lead on this project, as well as committee members Bill Orr, Brian Pellis, Ed Ridder, Ed Hensley, and Brad White.

Proposed New Member

At our meeting this past Tuesday, Jeffrey Torres was our honored guest. Jeffrey graduated from San Bernardino High School in 2011 and attended UC Berkeley and the University of La Verne School of Law.  He was recently admitted to the California Bar and works for the law firm of Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo in Riverside specializing in education law. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Jeffrey worked for several years in the San Bernardino City Unified School District and was also a Disneyland cast member. Jeffrey is also a recent addition to the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra Board. Perhaps most notably, Jeffrey is a 2011 graduate of our prestigious San Bernardino Rotary Life Program! Jeffrey has been proposed for membership in our club; please welcome him and make him feel right at home.

Preparing for our New Rotary Year

As a club, we have many things to be proud of over the last year. Among other events, our Rotary Life students had a wonderful philanthropy project delivering Easter baskets to families at the Ronald McDonald House. We prepared, collected, and donated Valentine’s cards and care packages for the Sweet on Soldiers project led by Terri Relf. Each of us also gave back to our communities in our own ways. However, we have much more great work to do this Rotary year! Later this summer, we will have our annual Club Assembly where we will brainstorm ideas for this new year and commit to service projects our club would like to develop and support for the 2024/2025 year.  Until then, get those creative juices flowing and come up with some good ideas to share at our upcoming Club Assembly.

Living in the Present and Letting Go of any Regrettable Past

Did you know that this Saturday, July 20th is national “Toss Away the ‘Could Haves’ and ‘Should Haves’ Day?” Created by motivational speaker Dr. Martha J. Ross-Rodgers, the third Saturday in July is recognized as a time to let go of the past and live for the present. Did you ever wake up and think “Why did I do that?”

We all do, and usually, we waste our time doing so. What is done is done. Toss Away the Could Haves and Should Haves Day is about accepting that you can't change the past and you should instead focus on the present. As humans, we all have regrets, embarrassments, missed opportunities, and other things we would like to change about our past. However, there is no sense in dwelling on bygones. Instead, let us focus on living our best lives in the here and now, and plan for the great things we can do for our families, friends, others, and ourselves in the future.

Program Committee – A Call to All Rotarians to Identify Guest Speakers

We owe many thanks to our 2023/2024 Program Chair Darcy McNaboe for providing a fantastic slate of guest speakers for our club over the last Rotary year that ended in June. In fact, Darcy went above and beyond the call of duty and scheduled speakers well into August! Finding interesting speakers willing to come to our noon meetings can be a challenging task. That is why all Rotarians are members of the Program Committee and we all have a responsibility to identify great citizens, businesspersons, civil servants, non-profit representatives, and others to provide presentations to our club. Please think of one or two people you can invite to our club this year as a guest speaker. You will be asked to contact the potential speaker to assess their interest and obtain a brief bio and photo from the guest speaker for publication in our Orange Peal. If we each do our part, we can look forward to another wonderful and interesting year ahead! If you have any questions about how to recruit a guest speaker, please ask Darcy or our 2022/2023 Program Committee Chair Brian Pellis for guidance. Thanks in advance for your help and support to make our meetings great!
