We had no meeting this past week in observance of Independence Day. I hope everyone had a fantastic Fourth of July, filled with happy memories and time spent with family and friends. Fireworks lit up the night sky on Thursday with the sounds of celebrating and children laughing. We have much to be thankful for and to be proud of in our country, but there is always more work to be done. That is why so many of us became Rotarians, to give back to our community and our country as good citizens and express our gratitude and appreciation for our wonderful opportunities and privileges. Let’s seize on these patriotic feelings and positive spirit to renew our motivation for a productive 2024-2025 Rotary year of “Service Above Self.” I look forward to seeing you all again this Tuesday at noon at the Elks Lodge.
Happy New (Rotary) Year!
July 1 is the beginning of the new Rotary year. This is more than just a basic fiscal year changeover for our great organization, it is also a time of renewal and new beginnings when fresh leaders assume their positions in Rotary clubs, districts, zones, and at the highest levels of Rotary International. With that said, a few important introductions are in order.
Dr. Bill Orr is our new 2024-2025 Rotary Club of San Bernardino President! Bill has been a proud Rotarian since 2006 and has a distinguished career in public and volunteer service. He has served in a wide variety of club-level roles and recently completed his term as Assistant Governor for our Rotary District.
This is certainly not Bill’s first rodeo as a club leader, having served as our club president in the past. With his knowledge, experience, and passion, we look forward to a wonderful year under Bill’s great leadership as we also enjoy and thrive on his amazing positive energy! As we all know, the role of Club President is a challenging and time-consuming position, and we sincerely appreciate Bill serving as our Club President once again.
This year’s District 5330 Governor is Judy Zulfiqar from the Rotary Club of Temecula. Judy is an accomplished chief strategist with a wealth of experience in marketing, communications, and business and community leadership. She has served in a multitude of positions at the District level including as a member of the Rotary Task Force to Fight Human Trafficking, a member of the Foundation Gala Committee, and District Public Relations Chairperson. Judy’s path to District Governor has been years in the making. She has served as Governor Nominee Designee, Governor Nominee, and Governor-Elect, completing three full years of study and preparation before taking on her position as District Governor. If you’d like to know more about Judy, you can view her biography at https://www.district5330.org/district-directory/.
Last but certainly not least, our new Rotary International President is Stephanie Urchick from the Rotary Club of McMurray, Pennsylvania. Stephanie's professional background is in the higher education, consulting, and entertainment industries. She received her doctorate in Leadership Studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and has been recognized and awarded by The Rotary Foundation and numerous community and international organizations. A Rotary member since 1991, Stephanie has participated in a variety of international service projects, including National Immunization Days in India and Nigeria. She has been an RI director and Rotary Foundation trustee. Rotary International 2024-2025 Presidential Theme
Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick selected “The Magic of Rotary” as this year’s Rotary International Theme. Stephanie believes that Rotarians create magic with every project completed, every dollar donated, and every new member recruited to serve. “Don’t misunderstand me – we are not going to end polio or bring peace to the world by waving a wand and saying some funny words,” Urchick told incoming district governors at the Rotary International Assembly on January 8, 2024. “It’s up to you. You create the magic with every project completed, every dollar donated, and every new member.” To see Stephanie’s motivating speech, please click: https://tinyurl.com/56xwk4vs. To learn more about this year’s theme and Stephanie’s presidential priorities, visit https://www.rotary.org/en/stephanie-urchick-celebrates-magic-rotary.
July is Maternal and Child Health Month
The July 2024 Rotary International theme is “Maternal and Child Health Month.” Every day mothers risk their lives giving birth and millions of children die each year from treatable, preventable causes. More than 80 percent of maternal deaths can be prevented with access to reproductive health services and trained healthcare workers. Additionally, at least seven million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, Rotarians use grant funding provided by the Rotary Foundation to provide immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improve access to essential medical services, and support trained healthcare providers for mothers and their children. Rotarians also provide education, birthing kits, and mobile health clinics to support these causes. Women are also taught how to prevent mother-to-infant HIV transmission, how to breast-feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease. In addition to providing services and education, these projects also focus on long-term sustainability by empowering local communities to take ownership of healthcare training programs.

Dee Goins, Youth Build Inland Empire
Dee Goins was born and raised in Southern California. A mother of three, she has been blessed with an additional 13 children through foster care, step-parenting, and as a godparent. Dee's faith has been a guiding light throughout her life, especially during her many years of providing nourishment and support to young people. Her grandchildren are the joy of her life, and she delights in spoiling them and sending them home "rotten."
Dee's professional journey began with a role in the County of Riverside, where she worked for 8 years before her entrepreneurial spirit took flight. In 1999, she founded True Green Cleaning as a family business, which grew to become one of the Inland Empire's premier property maintenance firms.
In 2009, Dee was elected President of the Riverside Chapter of the Southern California Black Chamber of Commerce, later assuming the role of Vice President. In this capacity, she finds fulfillment in assisting minorities and small businesses in navigating the complexities of the business world.
Driven by her deep care for young people, Dee assumed the role of Executive Director of Youth Build Inland Empire in June 2018. This organization helps young adults aged 16-30 earn a high school diploma and pursue a career pathway after graduation. Dee's mission is to ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of the challenges they face in traditional high school.
"I am thrilled about the direction of the program," Ms. Goins remarks, "and the new possibilities we can offer." She takes pride in working alongside a fantastic group of young individuals and cherishes each one of them.
