I hope you all enjoyed our Rotary meeting this past Tuesday held at the Claim Jumper. Unfortunately, our scheduled guest speaker Dr. Sandra Rodriguez, Assistant Superintendent of the San Bernardino City Unified School District, was ill and could not join us. However, Dr. Rodriguez was kind enough to send Principal Raul Pedraza and Vice Principal Jesus Galdamez of the SBCUSD Inland Career Education Center to speak to our club in her place.
Raul and Jesus provided an informative presentation about the many services offered to residents of San Bernardino and across the region, focusing on vocational education and preparing adults to enter the workforce. Programs offered include English language proficiency, citizenship courses, barbering, and a fully-accredited Licensed Vocational Nursing course provided at a fraction of the cost of private colleges.
Labor Day
Tomorrow we celebrate the Labor Day holiday. As such, there will be no Rotary meeting on Tuesday, September 5. We will resume our normal meeting schedule on Tuesday, September 12 at noon at the Elks Lodge.
Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated with a parade on September 5, 1882 in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
